Foreign Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the grave threat of terrorism to global peace and security during his speech at the BRICS foreign ministers meeting in Cape Town. He called upon all nations to take decisive actions against terrorism, including targeting its financing and propaganda.

Jaishankar stressed that terrorism must be combated in all its forms and manifestations and should never be condoned under any circumstances.

The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of China and Russia, Qin Gang and Sergey Lavrov, respectively. It was held in preparation for the upcoming BRICS summit in August, which is scheduled to take place in South Africa.

However, there have been reports suggesting that South Africa might consider relocating the summit to China or Mozambique due to the International Criminal Court's war crimes arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Jaishankar highlighted the need for the BRICS nations to address contemporary issues seriously, constructively, and collectively in the current global environment.

He emphasized that the gathering should send a strong message that the world is becoming more multipolar, necessitating a shift away from outdated approaches. Jaishankar urged member-states to demonstrate sincerity in their efforts to reform global decision-making processes, including those of the United Nations Security Council.

The foreign minister emphasized the increased responsibility faced by the BRICS nations in the wake of the devastating effects of the Covid pandemic, ongoing conflicts, and economic distress in the Global South.

These challenges underscore the significant shortcomings of the current international architecture, which fails to reflect contemporary politics, economics, demographics, and aspirations.
