The movie producer team of 2015 Uttama Villain filed a complaint against the renowned actor Kamal Haasan, alleging him of contract breach, as he had not fulfilled the promise made after the failure of the film.

What was better received by critics was the film Uttama Villain, written and starred by Haasan himself in the leading role. However, the movie did not recover its budget at the box office. Consequently, the film not only got Lingusamy and Subash Chandrabose of the Thirrupathi Brothers to the edge of a financial crisis but also got them into heavy debt.

As mentioned in the complaint forwarded to the Producers Council, Haasan promised to do another movie with the same producers to cover the losses they made in Uttama Villain. Nevertheless, still, after nine years, the actor has supposedly been disobedient to this promise as well.

Lingusamy said that they had even tried to negotiate with Haasan over the remake of the Malayalam movie Drishyam, but the veteran actor had firmly turned down the offer. Even more ironically he was working on the Drishyam remake with another production house within a few weeks.

"Kamal Haasan rewrote the screenplay of Uttama Villain repeatedly during the shoot and that resulted in extreme budget increases and the failure of the film," Lingusamy claimed in his complaint. Haasan had promised them to play in their next project, which is worth Rs 30 crores, in order to compensate for those losses but he never did.

The manufacturers, in turn, are appealing to the Producer's Council which is now seeking ways to put an end to this issue. So far, Haasan, who has been the lead in a great number of successful movies during his sixty years in the film industry, has not spoken about the accusations either.

Such a legal dispute brings out the kind of cracking that can happen between performers and makers when a film fails to do well commercially, exhibiting unfulfilled promises. As they await the council's verdict, the case is again highlighting the old Uttama Villain saga.
