Although some film stars have found success in politics, not all of them are able to sustain a long-term political career.

In 2017, Rajinikanth, the iconic star of Indian Tamil cinema, made a bold move into the realm of electoral politics by announcing his intention to form a new party with the aim of ushering in political transformation.

Back then, the 67-year-old Rajinikanth captivated his enthusiastic supporters as he outlined his vision to bring about systemic change and promote good governance in Tamil Nadu, a state with a population of 72 million.

During a six-day event where he met with thousands of fervent fans eagerly anticipating an announcement, Rajinikanth had declared, "I am entering politics because it is the need of the hour."

“I am not doing this for any post. I do not come for money or fame, as I have enough. But the politics have become so bad that the rest of the world is laughing at us,” he said in Tamil.

“I am not a coward, so I have to step in.”

Rajnikanth, an immensely popular star in India, has appeared in over 175 blockbuster films since 1975, primarily in Tamil and Telugu languages. His larger-than-life presence is celebrated with massive cut-outs dedicated to him in towns and villages across Tamil Nadu, where fans even perform rituals like pouring milk over them as a form of worship, akin to the veneration of Hindu gods.

His original name is  Shivaji Rao Gaekwad. He started his career as a bus conductor before pursuing his passion for acting and enrolling in an acting school. His remarkable talent and contributions to the arts have been recognized with prestigious national awards.
