Nitu’s Win for India

Nitu has become the world champion in the 48kg weight category to create history at the marquee tournament by defeating her opponent by 5-0. The 22-year-old has now become the sixth Indian boxer (male or female) to win the world championship gold. Beijing Olympics bronze medallist Vijender Singh, who is also Nitu’s idol was present at the event.

The World Boxing Champion is a 2022 Strandja Memorial gold medallist as well as Commonwealth Games gold medallist. She has also bagged the title of being the sixth Indian pugilist to win the World Championship. The Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs in the Government of India, Hardeep Singh Puri has congratulated the Nitu on Twitter, ” India’s Nitu Ghanghas punches her way to a glorious Gold at Women's World Boxing Championship 2023. Kudos to the champion!”

 How Nitu Tackled Her Opponent

She started aggressively and was able to take the first round 5-0. Despite her opponent having a strong comeback, the Bhiwani boxer used her combination of punches, jabs and hooks perfectly throughout the match. Proving herself unconquerable all along, Nitu won her first three bouts by RSC (Referee stops contest). In the last edition in the quarterfinal stage, Alua Balkibekova had knocked her out, but she skilfully adapted to negate the Kazakh's strong suit

At present, India has won 11 Women's World Boxing Championships gold medals. Apart from Nitu, the other winners of the title are Mary Kom (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018), Sarita Devi (2006), Jenny RL (2006), Lekha KC (2006) and Nikhat Zareen (2022).
