A tiger that had been prowling around Ceylon Colony in Chithar, Kanyakumari, has been successfully captured by a team of 17 forest officials, including a veterinarian. The operation, dubbed KMT 9, was executed with limited resources but marked a significant achievement. The tiger was captured on Wednesday and later transported to Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai.
On July 3, residents of Ceylon Colony contacted the District Forest Officer (DFO) to report a wild animal had killed a goat in the area. Tiger claw marks were discovered, and the goat's owner received restitution. A few days later, the tiger made an unsuccessful effort to hunt a cow in the colony before being chased away by the owner.
A man and a cow were injured in subsequent events. The DFO upped their game, sending out sniffer dogs and setting up more camera traps. It was decided to tranquillize and trap the tiger in cages.
The tiger was responsible for the deaths of several goats and a cow. When the tiger's movements were once again spotted, the hunt restarted. Mudumalai Tiger Reserve sent in their expert crew to help with the rescue.
The tiger was discovered hiding in a cave close to the Kallaraivayal tribal community on August 9. After numerous fruitless tries, the vet finally calmed the tiger down. The tiger appeared frail and anaemic for its age of about 14. After receiving treatment, it was sent to Arignar Anna Zoological Park.
The DFO stressed the importance of the success in light of the constrained resources. The operation demonstrated the forest service's commitment to protecting both people and the tiger.
After a string of attacks on local livestock and human people, the tiger was finally captured. The crew worked together and planned carefully to catch the elusive tiger, which will be taken to the Chennai Zoo for medical care.
