Border Roads Organisation Achieves Record:-

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has achieved a remarkable feat by clearing Ladakh's lifelines via Srinagar and Manali in record time, providing all-weather access to the strategically important region. The Move is expected to have a significant impact on defence preparedness and the quality of life in the region.

The Srinagar route spanning 439 km was made available for vehicles on March 16, only 68 days after the clearance work began. This marks a considerable improvement from previous times when the Zoji La pass, situated 100 km from Srinagar and standing at an elevation of 11,540ft, used to stay closed for several months. This year, it was kept open until January 6. Similarly, the Manali-Leh road stretching 427 km and featuring the Atal tunnel was opened on Saturday after 138 days, well ahead of the initially expected time frame of May/June.

After a 55-day hiatus, the Shinku La situated on the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha (NPD) road, reaching an elevation of 16,561ft, was reopened on Thursday. This particular road is being constructed as the third axis to Ladakh and has not yet been surfaced with a layer of asphalt.

The prompt reopening of these roads will aid the forces in distributing their annual troop rotations across a greater period of time, rather than attempting to do so in a condensed 3-4 month span. This is especially significant given the Galwan border clashes with the Chinese army that took place in May 2020. The reopening will also facilitate the transportation of civilian and fresh supplies at a lower expense compared to air freight. Additionally, it will provide a less expensive travel option for Ladakhis returning home and guest workers who would otherwise have to rely on exorbitantly priced flights during times when heavy snowfall results in road closures.

The short closures of the difficult passes have demonstrated the BRO's snow-clearing capability, and the government is keen to capitalize on this by boring two new tunnels. The first will be under Zoji La, which is expected to be completed soon, and the second will be under Shinku La. The Shinku La tunnel will enable traffic to avoid the four high, avalanche-prone narrow passes, the desolate wind-swept landscape, and the extreme cold on the Manali-Leh route during winters.

The opening of these roads in record time is a remarkable achievement by the BRO, and it will have a significant Impact on defense preparedness and the quality of life in Ladakh. The two new tunnels being constructed will further ensure all-weather connectivity to the region, providing a boost to its economic and strategic significance.
