Ajinkya Rahane, the veteran Mumbai batter, found himself embroiled in controversy during a Ranji Trophy match against Assam. His career saw its first-ever field obstruction dismissal during the match held at Mumbai's Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy. The incident occurred just before the tea break on Day 1.

Despite the setback, Mumbai, known for its formidable form, managed to restrict Assam to a meager 84 runs. However, Mumbai faced its challenges with a top-order collapse early in the innings. It was a resilient 50-run partnership between Rahane and Shivam Dube that rescued Mumbai from a precarious position of 60/4.

The controversial moment unfolded in the 25th over when Rahane, batting on 18, attempted a quick single. However, a throw from Assam's Denish Das resulted in an appeal for obstruction of the field. The on-field umpire upheld the appeal, signaling Rahane's dismissal before the tea interval.

Despite being given out, Rahane displayed sportsmanship by returning to bat for the third session. Assam's coach visited Mumbai's dressing room, expressing regret for the appeal and withdrawing it. Shardul Thakur, Mumbai's pacer, revealed that Rahane initially hesitated but was persuaded by teammates to bat again for the team's sake.

Shivam Dube, meanwhile, showcased exceptional form, scoring an unbeaten century off just 95 balls. His remarkable innings helped Mumbai reach a commanding position, posting a total of 217/6 by the end of Day 1, securing a substantial lead of 133 runs over Assam.

The incident sparked debates on ethics and fair play in cricket, highlighting the fine balance between competition and sportsmanship on the field. Rahane's return to bat symbolized not just individual resilience but also the collective spirit of the team in the face of adversity.
