It was reported that a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill faculty member was fatally shot on campus on Monday afternoon. A school spokesman mentioned that authorities have apprehended a suspect. The occurrence led to people taking shelter for several hours as the police conducted their investigation.
Around 1:02 pm ET, shots were allegedly discharged at Caudill Laboratories on the school grounds. Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz subsequently affirmed that law enforcement had apprehended a suspect shortly after 2:30 pm.
The names of the suspect and the faculty member were not immediately revealed. On Monday night, UNC Police Chief Brian James conveyed that it was too early to ascertain the motive behind the shooting. He added that the firearm employed in the shooting had not yet been located.
At approximately 1 pm, the school issued a warning to students, directing them to seek shelter. Subsequently, they updated the information, stating that a suspect remained unapprehended. Later in the afternoon, the university issued an “all clear” notification.
Officials decided to cancel classes and campus events scheduled for both Monday and Tuesday.
The university is currently in its second week of the fall semester, with a student body of around 32,000, accompanied by over 4,000 faculty members and 9,000 staff personnel.
