Mahsa Amini

Safa Aeli, the uncle of the late Iranian Kurdish activist Mahsa Amini, was imprisoned by Iranian officials just days before the first anniversary of Amini's terrible death. Protests erupted all around Iran for a long time when Mahsa Amini died while in detention. Concern has been voiced by campaigners and human rights groups over the detention of her uncle.

Safa Aeli, 30, was brought into custody by security forces in her hometown of Saqez, western Iran. His arrest has been confirmed by multiple sources, including the Kurdish-focused Hengaw rights group, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network in France, and the 1500 tasvir protest monitor. The Iranian government apparently sent a group of five vehicles to Aeli's house and barged in without a warrant or other justification.

This arrest is especially poignant given that it is happening so close to September 16th, day of Mahsa Amini's death. Protests sprang out in Iran after her death in detention, which was reportedly caused by her transgression of the country's stringent dress regulations for women. Rights groups claim that hundreds of people were killed and thousands were arrested as a result of the government's crackdown on these protests.

Family members of protest victims have been reportedly targeted and interrogated by Iranian authorities in an effort to quiet them and prevent additional rallies, according to allegations made by Amnesty International and other advocacy groups. Notably, Mashallah Karami, the father of one of the seven men murdered in connection with the protests, was recently detained.

Concerns that the Iranian government is ramping up its efforts to quell any protest as the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's killing approaches have grown. Hotels in Saqez have apparently been told not to admit guests from outside the area because of the additional security measures and the installation of new surveillance cameras surrounding Amini's grave.

The terrible death of Mahsa Amini provoked widespread protests in Iran, and this recent arrest only serves to highlight the persistent human rights concerns in the country and the continuous struggle for justice and responsibility.
