Ex-Jammu and Kashmir CM and leader of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party, Ghulam Nabi Azad, stated that those who are against the revocation of Article 370 lack understanding of the region's history and geography. He made this comment during the Supreme Court proceedings related to petitions questioning the constitutional validity of the government's decision on August 5, 2019, to remove the special status of the former state granted by Article 370.
Commemorating the fourth anniversary of this debated action in the current month, the BJP celebrated the period of newfound tranquility, growth, and prosperity in Kashmir since the annulment of Article 370.
Speaking to media in Doda, Azad indirectly criticized regional parties without explicitly mentioning them. The former Congress leader stated that those who opposed the revocation of Article 370 in the Supreme Court were unaware of the ground situation, as well as the history and geography of Jammu and Kashmir. He mentioned that Article 370 was not intended for any specific region, province, or religion but had equal benefits for all.
Azad expressed his complete trust in the Supreme Court and believed that it would thoroughly examine all aspects of the abrogation of Article 370.Previously, the BJP officially declared that the annulment of Article 370 had resulted in the establishment of tranquility, growth, and affluence in Jammu and Kashmir.
On the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the removal of Article 370 on August 5, the former chief minister and leader of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, alleged that she and other senior party leaders were placed under "house arrest."
A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on Wednesday started hearing a batch of pleas challenging the Centre's August 5, 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370 advocated by Kapil Sibal. They inquired how a provision (Article 370), which had been expressly referred to as a temporary measure in the Constitution, could transition to a permanent status after the conclusion of the Jammu and Kashmir Constituent Assembly's tenure in 1957.
The panel argued that the Parliament's assertion as the legislative body of Jammu and Kashmir for the purpose of revoking Article 370 was not permissible, given that Article 354 of the Constitution does not empower such an utilization of authority.
