On Wednesday, the Hindu festival of RamNavami witnessed a sense of intolerance through a disturbing incident in Bengaluru. The assault of three men traveling in a car accompanied by the chanting "Jai Shri Ram" slogans to celebrate the festival was carried out by two motorcycle-borne men in the Chikkabettahalli locality.

In the police record, it is mentioned that the flag bearer (victims) was reciting 'Jai Shri Ram' when both the accused objected and stopped. The culprits, identified as Farman and Sameer of MS Palaya, commanded the victims to utter "Allah Hu Akbar" instead of "Jai Shri Ram," which was considered blasphemous to them.

When the three men did not abide, there was a fight. As one of the accused, Farman hastily ran, he snatched a stick and then, with the stick, struck a man on the head and injured another's nose. The perpetrator attempted to get hold of the men's flags as well.

An FIR (first information file) was filed at the Vidyaranyapura police station, and Farman, Sameer, and another accomplice were arrested under sections of malicious acts, injury to religious sentiments, unlawfully causing injury by dangerous weapons, criminal intimidation, and rioting. One defendant got away from the whole incident.

DCP Northeast B.M. Laxmi Prasad said that the three youths were seen waving the flag and chanting Jai Shri Ram while traveling in the car. In the meantime, two youths blocked the car and asked them why they were shouting these slogans and even demanded that they declare Allah Hu Akbar.

This attack on a religious celebration, along with the resulting death, has ignited furor about religious intolerance in town. Authorities have to get severe for the perpetrators in order to persist with the principles of secularism and keep peace & harmony in the community.
