Taiwan is on high alert as it anticipates the arrival
of Typhoon Haikui, leading to the cancellation of domestic flights and the
evacuation of nearly 3,000 people. This powerful storm is expected to bring
torrential rain and strong winds, primarily impacting the southern and eastern
regions of the island.
On Sunday afternoon, Typhoon Haikui is expected to
make landfall in the far southeast of Taiwan, a mountainous and sparsely
populated region. Many eastern and southern municipalities have canceled school
and proclaimed a holiday for their employees as a precautionary measure.
In terms of intensity, Typhoon Haikui is not as severe as Typhoon Saola, which recently impacted Hong Kong and the southern Chinese province of Guangdong. According to Tropical Storm Risk, by the time it approaches Taiwan, it will only be a Category 1 or 2 storm.
The government of Taiwan has taken preventative
measures in the face of the oncoming storm by ordering the evacuation of 2,868
people, most of whom live in the south and east, where they are most at risk.
The two largest domestic airlines in Taiwan, UNI Air, and Mandarin Airlines, grounded all flights on Sunday out of an abundance of caution. In addition, there was a halt in ferry operations to distant islands. Only 25 foreign flights were canceled on Sunday, a much smaller number than the total number of planes affected.
The armed forces of Taiwan have been called into
service to provide aid to those affected by the flooding and to aid in the
evacuation of residents from their homes.
Forecasts indicate that Typhoon Haikui will cross the
Taiwan Strait and continue on its way into China after making landfall in
southern Taiwan. As the storm develops, authorities in Taiwan are keeping a
careful eye on it and preparing for its arrival.
