A 21-year-old Chennai woman died by suicide after her brother and accomplices murdered her Dalit husband, following opposition to their inter-caste marriage. Arrests made, but the woman alleged parental involvement before her tragic demise.
A horrifying hate crime and prejudice towards an inter-caste marriage has ended in the death of a 21-year-old by suicide in Chennai. The tragedy was set in motion after her brother and four other accomplices, on February 25, 2024, brutally killed her 22-year-old Dalit husband, just months after their marriage, which took place in October 2022.
The bride, who was of the Vanniyar community, an OBC caste, had fought hard but had eloped with a boy of the forward caste. The marriage of the two was opposed by many people, and this was manifested by the horrendous act of murdering the man by the hand of the woman's brother and his aides.
While experiencing the deep loss, the woman believed in justice and sought the strict punishment against those who helped the horrible crime which her family member committed. Sadly, the emotional burden became too heavy for her and on April 20th, she tried to take her own life by the time she was living with her in laws.
She was soon sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, where she continued to fight for her life. Unfortunately, on April 22, her fight came to an end when she passed away due to her injuries. A suicide note was not found, meaning that the circumstances could not be reconstructed except by the investigation.
The brother of the woman and his four fellow criminals have been arrested and charged with murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, and also, appropriate sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. While the woman has accused her in-laws to be the masterminds behind the killing of her husband, the police, instead, has planned to take statements from both the sets of parents to figure out what happened further.

It is devastating to read this case again and to acknowledge that caste-based discrimination and the struggle for inter-caste marriages acceptance is a deep-rooted problem in India. While the nation is struggling with this disaster, demand for stricter regulations and societal transformation, which aims at eliminating the phenomenon of hate crimes, are becoming louder and louder.
The tragedy of the death of two young people, who have fallen victim to intolerance and hatred, is a sad reflection of an unfinished task in creating a tolerant and non-discriminatory society.
