The ED raided premises linked to the personal secretary of a Jharkhand minister and recovered a massive cash haul of ₹20-30 crore from the aide's domestic help, in a money laundering case related to alleged corruption in rural development schemes.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided several locations in Ranchi on Monday, recovering a huge sum of cash from the domestic help of an assistant of a Jharkhand minister, sources said.
The raids were conducted at the premises of Sanjiv Lal, the personal secretary of the Jharkhand Rural Development Minister Alamgir Alam in an ongoing money laundering investigation against the chief engineer Virendra Ram.
The recovered cash, estimated to be between ₹20-30 crore, was from the residence of Lal's domestic help as the sources informed. The seized bundles of cash were predominantly in ₹500 denomination notes. Authorities also recovered some jewelry during the operation.
The images of ED officials counting and seizing the cash in the room filled with bags of notes were released during the raid.
The ED case is related to an FIR by Jharkhand's Anti-Corruption Bureau in 2019, which led to the arrest of Virendra Ram on 29th February 2023, over the alleged irregularities in the implementation of the government schemes in the rural development department.
The investigation agency has revealed that Ram as well as his accountant are accused of money laundering through fictitious transactions and then using the illicit funds to buy properties and luxury vehicles.

Minister Alamgir Alam, the Congress leader from Pakur, has not been named as the accused in the case. The ED is tracing the money trail to expose the bigger corruption scam.
The huge amount of cash recovered has opened up serious
doubts about the reported involvement of bureaucrats and their aides in
corruption and misuse of funds meant for rural development plans in Jharkhand.
