In preparation for an expected surge in individuals seeking to exchange ₹2,000 notes for smaller denominations, banks have made necessary arrangements to handle the crowd by setting up dedicated counters, according to officials.

On Monday, it was announced that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has already provided banks with a standardized set of instructions (standard operating procedure or SOP) to facilitate and streamline the exchange process.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das emphasized on Monday that the ₹2000 notes will retain their status as legal tender, despite the central bank's earlier announcement regarding their withdrawal from circulation.

He further expressed his belief that there won't be a sudden influx of people at bank branches and advised individuals not to hastily flock to banks.

The State Bank of India (SBI), the largest public sector bank in the country based on its assets, has implemented a new guideline for its branches regarding the exchange of ₹2,000 currency notes. According to this guideline, customers will not be required to provide any form of identification or proof when exchanging these notes.

However, it is important to note that there is a maximum limit of ₹20,000 for depositing or exchanging these ₹2,000 banknotes, and this limit can only be availed once by the customer.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that individuals have a period, starting from May 23 and ending on September 30, to exchange or deposit ₹2,000 notes.

It is being done to gradually remove these notes from circulation. It is important to note that even after September 30, these notes will still be considered legal tender and can be used for transactions.

1) Locate the closest branch of any bank starting today, 23 May 2023, where you can deposit or exchange your ₹2000 notes.

2) Upon arrival at the bank, you will be provided with a request slip. It is essential to fill out this form completely to facilitate the exchange process for your ₹2000 notes.

3) After filling out the request slip, you need to submit the form along with your ₹2000 notes to the bank. They will assist you in exchanging the notes at the nearest available facility.

The maximum amount of ₹2000 notes that can be exchanged at once is 10 (₹20,000). However, there is no specific limit on depositing ₹2000 notes as long as individuals comply with the existing Know Your Customer (KYC) guidelines and other relevant legal requirements.
