As Beirut, Lebanon- The hostilities between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have seen a dramatic escalation in recent days. The two sides are currently trading heavy rocket and airstrikes across the border which might be some of the worst clashes in the past 19 years.
The group Hezbollah said it had fired tens of Katyusha rockets at the northern Israeli border town of Shomera as a response to Israeli air raids from the previous day that killed at least two people which included an 11-year-old girl.
An Israeli retaliatory action consisted of more than ten airstrikes from warplanes on the Lebanese town of Ayta al-Shaab, which is located 1800 meters from Israeli town of Shomera, 3 kilometers across the border, according to a Lebanese security source.
The border exchange was to be regarded as an alarming escalation of the tense situation at the Israeli-Lebanese border that was the background of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militants in Gaza which erupted last October.
"What we are seeing now is the worst kind of fighting since the 2006 war," an Anonymous Hezbollah official said. "The Israeli army is launching a full-scale attack on Lebanon and its villages and civilians."
On Tuesday, Hezbollah claimed they had carried out a drone attack on Israel’s military bases near the city of Acre, which is considered to be the deepest strike that they have had so far during this round of violence. The Israeli military is allegedly on a high state of readiness and it is ready to conduct a wider confrontation with the Iran-backed Shiite group.
In just a few days starting from yesterday, over 250 Hezbollah fighters were killed by Israeli strikes in Lebanon and another 30 in Syria which equals the total number of Hezbollah losses in the whole 2006 war. An unbelievable number of 70 Lebanese civilians have taken their last breath as well.
