As the scientific community is waiting with bated breath aiming for the successful third edition of India's moon mission, Chandrayaan-3 on Friday, here is a quick look at how the country's lunar expedition evolved over the years.

Chandrayan-3
India launched the Chandrayaan-3 successfully at 2:35 p.m., today (14th July 2023) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.


The Chandrayaan-3 mission, India's third attempt at a soft landing on the Moon's surface, launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh. After the failed landing of Chandrayaan-2 in 2019, this mission is the next logical step. If all goes well with the August landing of Chandrayaan-3, India will become only the fourth country in history to step foot on the moon, after the United States, the erstwhile Soviet Union, and China.


The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has stated that a soft landing on the Moon, a demonstration of a roving Rover on the lunar surface, and research into the lunar environment are the three most important goals of the 615 crore mission. The lunar lander and rover modules of the spacecraft carry scientific instruments to map and study the lunar surface. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has said that Chandrayaan-3 will test and demonstrate technologies that will be critical for future space exploration.


India's lunar mission

Ex-ISRO officials are confident in the mission's chances of success, including the organization's former head Madhavan Nair and scientist Nambi Narayan. Images from all throughout India showed people rejoicing and wishing the ISRO luck before the launch, demonstrating the country's enthusiasm for the endeavour.


Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is presently visiting France, shared the optimism of the people of India regarding Chandrayaan-3 by saying that the spacecraft carries India's hopes and dreams. The launch of the mission brings to mind an emotional scene from the Chandrayaan-2 mission, in which Prime Minister Modi comforted a distraught K Sivan, the then-head of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), after the lander and rover had crashed but the orbiter had successfully deployed.


The entire country will be watching Chandrayaan-3's progress over the next month as it travels to the Moon in the hopes that this mission will pave the way for future successes in India's space programme.
