Guru Nanak Jayanti, a revered Sikh festival celebrated on Kartik Purnima, commemorates the 554th anniversary of Guru Nanak Saheb, the first Guru of the Sikhs. Known as Prakash Parv, devotees engage in spiritual activities, visit Gurudwaras, and recite Guru Granth Sahib. Special bhajan and kirtan programs are organized, accompanied by langar served by volunteers.

Guru Nanak, born in 1469 in Talwandi, Punjab (now in Pakistan), devoted his life to social reform, advocating against caste and class discrimination. His teachings emphasized unity, humanity, and honesty, reflected in the hymns and sermons contributing to Sikhism. Guru Nanak Jayanti is an occasion for Sikhs to celebrate their Guru's birth on Kartik Purnima.

The essence of Guru Nanak's teachings is encapsulated in the Ek Onkar mantra and the Guru Vani:

""Ek onkar satnam kartapurakh

Nirmoh nirvair akaal murat

Ajuni sabham

Guru parsad jap aad sach jugaad sach

Hai bhi sach nanak hose bhi sach

Soche soch na ho wai

Jo sochi lakh waar

Chhupe chhup na howai

Je laai har lakhtaar

Ukhiya pukh na utari

Je banna puriya paar

Sahasyanpa lakh woh hai

Ta ek na chale naal

Ke ve sach yaara hoi ae

Ke ve kude tutte paal

Hukum rajai chalna nanak likheya naal."
