Former Director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Professor Shalini Bharat, along with her husband and son, has been booked by the Govandi police following a complaint of harassment filed by her daughter-in-law, Anshumala Singh.
Anshumala married Madhav Singh, Shalini Bharat's son, in 2013. Anshumala, a senior manager in a public sector bank, tied the knot at the Taj Jai Mahal Palace in Jaipur, the venue being chosen at the insistence of Shalini. After the wedding, she started living with her in-laws at a place in Govandi.
According to allegations raised by Anshumala, communication with her in-laws became virtually non-existent, and she claimed to have faced pressure to undergo medical examinations when she and her husband were unable to conceive.
Anshumala also stated that her mother-in-law, Shalini, became angry when she suggested her husband get tested as well.
Furthermore, Anshumala alleged demands for dowry from her husband's family and pressure to stake a claim on her mother's property. Subsequently, she chose to live separately in company quarters in Belapur, Navi Mumbai.
The matter took a legal turn in 2020 when her husband served her with a divorce notice.
In 2023, Anshumala filed a case against her husband & in-laws under sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intent) of the IPC.
In response to the allegations, Shalini Bharat stated that the matter is currently before the Family Court and declined to comment further. She emphasized her belief in women's rights to justice and expressed confidence in the judiciary.
