A disagreement sparked between students of Government Arts and Science College in Sholinghur, resulting in clashes and subsequent arrests. The incident unfolded when a first-year BA English student from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community shared a photo of BR Ambedkar on his WhatsApp status.
His bench-mate, belonging to a dominant caste, questioned the choice, leading to a heated argument. The situation escalated further during the lunch break when the SC student called his peers from the same community, and a confrontation ensued between the two groups, resulting in a clash.
The college administration tried to avert the conflict, but it quickly escalated. Principal Sujatha recounted an impromptu gathering that started with ten people and swelled to twenty in the area just outside the college grounds. Unfortunately, the incident escalated, and the police had to be called in. The video of the fight aroused the police, who came as the group dispersed.
The DIG in Vellore has stated that four students were detained after the fight and later freed on bail with a warning. The authorities are also looking into whether or if any bystanders to the campus fight played a role.
The school principal has voiced concern over the prevalence of such instances despite persistent efforts to promote discipline. She suggested that a one-week suspension might be in order for the pupils involved. This altercation shows how social and caste disparities may cause friction even in the classroom.
This incident emphasizes the need for greater awareness and education about respecting diversity and maintaining harmony within campuses. The clash over the Ambedkar photo serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering a tolerant and inclusive environment within academic institutions.
