The rise of AI is disrupting entry-level coding jobs, leading tech firms to slash recruitment of fresh graduates for those roles at elite Indian engineering colleges like the IITs.

The emergence of generative AI like ChatGPT is disrupting the tech industry's entry-level job market in India to such an extent that the ripple effects are felt even at the campus hiring in elite engineering colleges across India. While the 2023-24 placement season for institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is approaching an end, recruiters at these campuses have a common observation: there is a dip in hiring of purely software coding positions.

"AI as a concept is not exactly new, but the way it is deployed in the current time is different," said Prof. SK Shrivastava, the in-charge, placement at IIT-BHU. He mentioned that at this stage AI can develop basic-level coding algorithms on its own and thus companies diminish hiring for those entry-level coding positions that were previously occupied by fresh graduates.

This impact is being felt at various IIT campuses with some 2024 graduates still not getting placements till June as the recruitment cycle extends beyond April. The international firms have disregarded both campus visits and hiring numbers which are, according to the previous years.

The tech slowdown not only affects the hiring process but also the coding job offers as the professors directly point out the current situation as the abilities of the AI generative tools. AI is one of the driving forces behind new trends in talent acquisition as mentioned by Prof. V Ramgopal Rao, the former director of IIT-Delhi.

On the other hand, the disturbance is confined to coding positions at the bottom of the organization. The truth is that there is an explosive growth in the need for professionals in fields such as data science, machine learning, cybersecurity and other areas that can exploit the potential of those models. Industries manufacturing companies have done their level best in hiring IIT graduating students this year.

Artificial Intelligence replacing some tasks will bring about organizations to need less entry-level workers on the one side and still require engineers who are capable of developing superior algorithms and applications on the other side. The campus placement scenario is now very dynamic to meet the changing AI era skills requirements.
