The deceased was identified as Mini, a thirty-year-old colony resident and a member of the Kattunayakan tribe, who lived in the bush. Suresh, her husband, was initially brought to a Nilambur public hospital for treatment following his horrifying injuries. He received treated at the public hospital before being transferred to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for more advanced care.

According to D Harilal, the forest officer for the Meppady range, the event occurred on Thursday as the couple was out gathering honey in the jungle near their colony.
