AIADMK, BJP, 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has officially severed its ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the highly anticipated 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The decision was reached unanimously, marking a major shift in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu.

K P Munusamy, the AIADMK deputy coordinator, articulated the party's decision, citing ongoing tensions with the state leadership of the BJP.

AIADMK, a key player in Tamil Nadu politics, has decided to end its alliance with the BJP, signaling a significant shift ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
AIADMK, a key player in Tamil Nadu politics, has decided to end its alliance with the BJP, signaling a significant shift ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

He emphasized that "the state leadership of the BJP has been continuously making unnecessary remarks about our former leaders, our general secretary EPS, and our cadres for the past one year."

This decision takes AIADMK out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, and positions the party to lead a separate front in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Notably, AIADMK had abstained from joining the opposition alliance, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance.

The strain in the AIADMK-BJP relationship had been evident for months, with Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai making controversial comments about AIADMK leaders, causing further discord between the two allies.

AIADMK spokesperson D Jayakumar described Annamalai as a "destructive pest" for his comments regarding Tamil Nadu's first chief minister, CN Annadurai.

The public exchange of words between the allies clouded their future together.

Despite several meetings, including one between AIADMK's K Palaniswami and BJP leader Amit Shah on September 14, and an AIADMK delegation's trip to Delhi to discuss the alliance issue with BJP chief JP Nadda and BJP leader Piyush Goyal, the BJP's national leadership did not intervene in the state-level feud.

The fallout comes after AIADMK's electoral performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where it won only one seat in alliance with the BJP. In contrast, when AIADMK contested alone in 2014, it secured 37 out of 38 Lok Sabha seats.

The AIADMK party workers in Chennai celebrated the decision, signifying their endorsement of the breakup. As of now, there has been no official reaction from Annamalai or the BJP regarding this development.
