Twitter (now known as X), a social networking network that was previously free, will soon start charging new users. According to Elon Musk, new X users will have to pay a "small" fee in order to access capabilities like bookmarking, posting, and reacting to tweets.

The first account to notice that new users will be charged was X Daily News, a well-known account that regularly updates about news linked to X. The article claims that the website now makes it clear that new users need to pay a nominal annual fee in order to gain access to the social network.

According to X Daily News, the Philippines and New Zealand previously implemented the regulation. It also demonstrates that improving user experience and reducing spam were the policy's initial objectives. "Unfortunately, a small fee for new user writing access is the only way to curb the relentless onslaught of bots," Musk wrote in a tweet. Modern AI (and troll farms) can readily answer such "are you a bot" questions.

Additionally, he clarified that the onslaught of fake accounts also uses up the available namespace, so many good handles are taken as a result.

Musk has made it clear that he wants to have X pay for itself in order to combat spam bots, but he hasn't provided any details about how X can stop automated bots and fake accounts. Spammers might, after all, just pay the little fee, open many accounts, and wait for the functionality to become accessible before publishing. Because there are more steps to join social media platform X and there are similar services available for free, users could be reluctant to do so.
