Women's Reservation Bill, Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, Census and Delimitation, India Parliament Historic Achievement

President Droupadi Murmu on Friday gave her nod to the women's reservation bill named

‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’

Under this new Act, 33% of seats in both the Lok Sabha (House of the People) and state assemblies will be reserved for women. However, the implementation of this reservation will be contingent on the completion of a new census and delimitation process.

In a special parliamentary session held in September, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed the women's reservation bill.

This accomplishment coincided with the inauguration of the new Parliament building on September 19, marking a significant moment in India's legislative history.

Despite the widespread support for the bill, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) voiced opposition, arguing that the reservation would primarily benefit Savarna women, as there was no provision for the reservation of seats for Muslim women representatives. Additionally, the Congress party sought reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and raised concerns about the extended timeline for implementation following its passage in Parliament and the President's approval.

The Act specifies that the provisions related to women's seat reservations will come into effect after the completion of delimitation based on the data from the first census conducted after the commencement of the Constitution Act in 2023. These provisions will remain in effect for a period of fifteen years from that commencement.
