In central Venezuela, tragedy struck as an illegal open-pit gold mine collapsed, claiming the lives of at least 14 individuals and leaving several others injured. According to officials, the mine, known as Bulla Loca, suffered a catastrophic collapse of its wall, trapping workers inside. Bolivar State Gov. Angel Marcano revealed that 14 bodies have been recovered thus far, with an additional 11 individuals reported injured. The grim situation has prompted urgent rescue efforts, with authorities racing against time to save those still trapped beneath the rubble.

The accident, which occurred in the Angostura municipality, has sparked concerns of a rising death toll, potentially reaching dozens. Mayor Yorgi Arciniega announced plans to transport around 30 coffins to the affected community, indicating the severity of the disaster. Desperate relatives of the miners have gathered in La Paragua, pleading for government assistance to airlift the injured and retrieve the bodies. Karina Ríos, whose loved one is among the trapped, expressed anguish over the lack of support and the deteriorating conditions that could accelerate decomposition.

The incident sheds light on the risks associated with Venezuela's burgeoning mining industry, marked by widespread illegal operations and hazardous working conditions. Despite government efforts to regulate the sector, many mines operate outside the law, offering employment opportunities while subjecting workers to perilous environments. Survivor Carlos Marcano lamented the tragic loss of life and the harrowing ordeal faced by those awaiting rescue.

This devastating event serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Venezuela's mining sector and underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to prevent future tragedies. As rescue efforts continue, the nation mourns the lives lost in this avoidable catastrophe.
