One of the pressing challenges affecting the world on a global scale remains poverty, characterized by hunger, malnutrition, and unequal access to education and services. This pervasive issue often results in social discrimination and hardship. Approximately 44 million people worldwide grapple with poverty, emphasizing the need for collective action and awareness. To address this, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was established.

Each year, on October 17, this international day seeks to foster understanding about poverty and underscore violations of human rights based on individuals' economic and cultural backgrounds. The day serves as a platform to unite communities and advocate for those trapped in the vicious cycle of poverty.

The theme for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty in 2023, as determined by the United Nations, is "Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting Dignity in Practice for All." This theme highlights the harsh realities faced by those mired in extreme poverty, who often toil in hazardous, unregulated conditions for long hours while still struggling to earn enough to sustain themselves and their families. The theme underscores the necessity of offering universal access to decent work and social protection as a means of upholding human dignity for all.

The roots of this international day trace back to October 17, 1987, when thousands of people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris. They emphatically declared that poverty represents a violation of human rights and that concerted efforts were imperative to ensure the recognition of these rights. Since then, individuals from diverse backgrounds and walks of life have annually convened on October 17 to reaffirm their commitment and display solidarity with those afflicted by poverty.

In December 1992, the General Assembly formalized the observance of October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, further underscoring the global commitment to combating this widespread issue.

This year marks the 31st anniversary of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, signifying its enduring importance. As poverty continues to rise worldwide, the day not only pays tribute to disadvantaged sections of society but also acknowledges their ongoing struggles. It serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to create a world where poverty is eradicated and human dignity is upheld for all.
