In a heart-wrenching incident, the Colombo-Katunayake expressway witnessed the untimely demise of Sri Lanka's State Minister of Water Supply, Sanath Nishantha, and a dedicated police officer in a fatal road accident. The tragic event unfolded at 2 am (local time) in the Kandana police division, where the minister's vehicle collided with a container truck, as reported by the police.

Following the collision, the minister's jeep, accompanied by his security officer and the driver, veered into the road fence, causing severe injuries to all occupants. Urgently, they were rushed to the Ragama hospital. The ill-fated journey had begun from Katunayake, heading towards Colombo.

Regrettably, the state minister and the police official succumbed to their injuries upon admission to the hospital, while the driver is presently receiving medical attention. The Kandana police, in collaboration with the Daily Mirror, are actively engaged in conducting further investigations to ascertain the circumstances leading to this tragic incident.

Sanath Nishantha, a distinguished Sri Lankan politician, held significant roles, having been elected to the Parliament from the Puttalam district in both 2015 and 2020. A member of the United People's Freedom Alliance, he later aligned himself with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, leaving an indelible mark on the political landscape.

This sorrowful event sends shockwaves through the nation, prompting reflections on the unpredictability of life and the profound loss to the political and security realms. Sri Lanka mourns the departure of a dedicated public servant and a committed law enforcement officer, leaving behind a void that will be challenging to fill.
