Thames Water Utilities Limited, the largest water services Company of the UK serving 15 million customers all across Britain has set off on its journey to mitigate problems arising from sewage discharges in Britain. This revolutionary plan is all set to start off soon to address environmental concerns speedily. Not only this, Thames Water has also set a goal to reduce its annual sewage discharges by 50% within the year 2030. Sarah Bentley, the Chief Executive Officer of Thames Water said, “The discharge of untreated sewage is unacceptable, and we are committed to tackling this problem.” Besides Thames Water, two primary institutions which will be leading this project are Ofwat and Britain’s Environment Agency.   1. Ofwat and Britain’s Environment Agency are the two institutions which will be responsible for tracing Companies which illegally release sewage discharges into waterways.
  2. Establishing wastewater treatment plants and improving the sewage network of Britain are also on the to- do list for Thames Water.
  3. In 2021, the British government had imposed a limit upon the amount of sewage that Companies could discharge. In lieu of the same regulations, the Environment Secretary has announced that all Companies must disclose their plans for improving wastewater management. Higher penalties have been planned to be imposed upon Companies which breach the set parameters.
