In a riveting Cricket World Cup 2023 encounter, Pakistan and South Africa clashed in an intense battle. The thrilling match, filled with suspense and excitement, saw the Proteas narrowly edge past Pakistan, securing a one-wicket victory at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. The high-stakes contest left Pakistan's captain, Babar Azam, seething over an eventful delivery from spin all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz, which cost them the game.

The match at Chepauk lived up to its reputation as the first humdinger of the tournament, with both teams fighting tooth and nail. Initially, South Africa appeared to be cruising towards an easy win. However, late strikes by Babar Azam's team produced a dramatic twist. With just one wicket remaining, Keshav Maharaj struck the winning runs off Nawaz, sending the South African team and their fans into a state of euphoria. In contrast, Babar Azam's anger at Nawaz was evident after the match's dramatic conclusion.

The turning point occurred during South Africa's chase of 271 runs. After exhausting all his pace bowlers, Babar Azam had no option but to turn to spinners in the final three overs. It was during Nawaz's seventh over that the incident unfolded. He delivered a short ball on the leg side with no backward square leg in place. Maharaj took advantage, playing a shot wide of backward square leg and sealing the victory, as the deep square leg fielder couldn't reach the ball in time. Babar Azam's visible frustration with Nawaz was a stark moment that marred Pakistan's fourth consecutive defeat in the tournament.

The loss dealt a significant blow to Pakistan's aspirations of reaching the World Cup semifinals. With just two wins in six matches and only three games left in the league phase, their chances are hanging by a thread. They can now accumulate a maximum of ten points, making their journey to the semifinals a challenging endeavor.
