Telangana's recent landmark move under the Congress government involves the initiation of the 'Maha Lakshmi scheme,' marking a significant stride towards inclusive public transportation. This program, a key pledge from the party's manifesto, aims to facilitate free travel for women, girls, and transgender individuals within the state boundaries through state-operated buses.

Revolutionizing transit accessibility, the scheme's inception, as approved by Telangana's new Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, encompasses six guarantees promised by the Congress party. The initiative stands to benefit women of all ages, ensuring their freedom to commute without financial constraints.

Commencing on December 9, the 'Maha Lakshmi scheme' aims to democratize travel for domiciled individuals in Telangana. Availing themselves of Palle Velugu and Express buses within the state will be cost-free for eligible beneficiaries. Furthermore, travel on inter-state routes up to the borders of Telangana will also be covered under this scheme.

Crucially, the government plans to reimburse the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) for the foregone fares, aligning with the scheme's commitment to cost-free travel for designated groups. This reimbursement strategy hinges on actual travel distances, as specified in the scheme's guidelines.

To ensure effective execution, the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of TSRTC have been tasked with overseeing the scheme's implementation. Detailed instructions and plans for a software-based 'Maha Lakshmi' smart card are underway, streamlining access for beneficiaries and ensuring seamless utilization of scheme benefits.

This groundbreaking scheme not only promotes gender inclusivity but also signifies a step towards fostering an equitable transportation system, enhancing accessibility and mobility for marginalized communities within Telangana.
