Surat, a bustling city in Gujarat, has officially achieved international airport status, marking a significant milestone in its aviation development. The Government of India, in a notification issued on Wednesday, elevated Surat airport's status, just a month after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated its state-of-the-art terminal. The Union Cabinet had earlier given its nod on December 15, solidifying the city's position on the global aviation map.

This strategic decision, taken under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi, is anticipated to unleash unprecedented economic potential for Surat, propelling it into a pivotal role in the international aviation arena. An official release emphasized the move's potential to foster a new era of prosperity, emphasizing the region's critical role in the global economic landscape.

"Elevating Surat airport to international status is paramount for enhancing economic growth, attracting foreign investment, and bolstering diplomatic ties. With a surge in passenger traffic and cargo operations, the airport's international designation will provide a crucial impetus for regional development," stated the release.

In December 2023, Surat Airport had already marked a significant development with the inauguration of a new integrated terminal building. This modern facility is designed to efficiently handle 1,200 domestic passengers and 600 international passengers during peak hours. Moreover, it possesses the flexibility to expand its peak-hour capacity to accommodate up to 3,000 passengers, aligning with the city's growing aviation needs. The annual handling capacity of the airport is projected to increase to 55 lakh passengers.

This monumental announcement and the recent infrastructure upgrade underscore Surat's commitment to not only meet but exceed the demands of the burgeoning aviation sector. As Surat embraces its international status, it positions itself as a key player in fostering economic growth, attracting global investments, and strengthening diplomatic relations.
