Supreme Court Suspends Rahul Gandhi's Conviction; Congress Welcomes Decision

The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday put a stay on the conviction of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 defamation case. 


The case was filed against him by former Gujarat minister and BJP MLA Purnesh Modi. Following this decision. 


Gandhi expressed his unwavering belief in the ultimate triumph of truth, stating that even if not today, truth will prevail tomorrow. He asserted his clarity of purpose and determination to carry out his responsibilities.

The origins of the case can be traced back to remarks made by Gandhi during an election rally in Kolar, Karnataka, in 2019, where he questioned the prevalence of the "Modi" surname among alleged thieves. Later Miffed over this, Purnesh Modi initiated the defamation suit against him.


During a press conference held at the Congress headquarters, Gandhi extended his gratitude to all those who supported him and acknowledged the affection and backing he received.

Meanwhile, Congress president, Mallikarjun Kharge, hailed the Supreme Court's ruling as a significant win for democracy and the constitution. He commended Rahul Gandhi's commitment to truth, India's progress, combating rising prices, and raising awareness on crucial issues.


Now, the Congress party awaits the restoration of Rahul Gandhi's membership, and Kharge expressed optimism about the process. The suspension of the conviction offers temporary relief to the leader, enabling him to continue his political endeavours without legal impediments.
