Santhan, a Sri Lankan national, who was embroiled in the infamous Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has met his demise in a Chennai hospital. The 55-year-old, also known as T Suthendiraraja, passed away due to a cardiac arrest, according to a hospital official. Santhan's involvement in the case dates back to 1991 when the former Indian Prime Minister was assassinated.

After serving over 20 years in prison, Santhan was among the seven individuals released by the Supreme Court in 2022. This decision came after they had completed their sentences in connection with the assassination. Despite his release, Santhan's health had been deteriorating, leading to his admission to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai.

Reports suggest that Santhan was admitted to the hospital from a special camp in Tiruchirappalli on January 27, 2024, due to liver failure. His condition worsened when he suffered a cardiac arrest around 4 am on the day of his demise. Hospital staff attempted to resuscitate him through CPR procedures, and he was put on a ventilator with oxygen support. However, Santhan did not respond positively to the treatment and eventually passed away at 7.50 am.
