A large number of WhatsApp users have reported spam calls from phone numbers with country codes of Indonesia, Kenya, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Malaysia, and a few other countries. To deal with this serious concern, WhatsApp is buckling up to bring in technological changes in its interface and provide more effective protection to its users.

Others reported that spam callers have tried to solicit money from WhatsApp on the pretext of running betting games and selling lottery tickets.

Experts have opined that receiving such spam calls is not an exclusive affair for WhatsApp. Spam callers make use of such opportunities of collecting private information such as phone numbers on every platform possible and call using phone numbers with such country codes, which do not have stringent guidelines on making calls to unknown numbers such as the ones mentioned earlier.

Actions Taken by WhatsApp

WhatsApp has informed that it is taking expedient steps to strengthen its backend by virtue of which it will be in a position to provide an enhanced protection of 50% to its users from spam calls.

Steps to Take in One’s Personal Capacity

Avoid answering spam calls. Even if you do, refrain from providing any sensitive information over the phone call. If you are suspicious about a spam call, prefer texting the person first and confirming his/her identity.

Overall, exercise caution in keeping a check on public places such as restaurants or malls where you communicate your phone number.
