Ravish Kumar has been the face of NDTV for over two decades. He has won two awards for excellence in journalism: the Ramon Magsaysay and the Ramnath Goenka Awards.
Ravish Kumar announced his resignation from NDTV on Wednesday after the departure of channel founders and promoters Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy from their positions as directors on the board of RRPR Holding Private Limited.
Several media outlets claimed that the resignation was announced internally via an e-mail chain at NDTV and would take effect immediately.
What led up to the sale of the channel to Adani, and how it came about quickly
Business mogul, Gautam Adani's acquisition of the New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV) news station has been met with widespread surprise and accusations of a "hostile takeover" by the program's viewers. The news channel's assertion that it purchased its 29.18 percent stake in NDTV without "discussion, approval, or notice" is a case in point.
The wealthiest man in Asia, Adani, attempted a hostile takeover of media conglomerate NDTV by indirectly purchasing a 29.18% interest in the network and then offering to buy the other 26%. According to NDTV, the loan was converted into stock without approval from the company's founders.
Since Mukesh Ambani already has a substantial footprint in the media industry with Network18, which operates a bouquet of channels, including news channel CNN-News18 and business channel CNBC-TV18, this will be the ports-to-energy group's most high-profile venture in the media sector.
Adani Enterprises Ltd (AELmedia )'s division, Adani Media Ventures Ltd (AMVL), purchased the digital business news site Quintillion Business Media Pvt Ltd last year (QBM).
With this latest development, the issue of a "hostile takeover" in the Indian business sector is once again front and center.
In Ravish Kumar's eyes, leaving NDTV is akin to watching "Beti ki Bidai."
Melodramatically, Ravish Kumar equated leaving NDTV to the "Beti ki Bidai" ceremony when the bride's parents say goodbye to her after she marries. When a bride leaves her parent's house, she keeps looking back at it, as noted by Ravish Kumar. Right now, I have the same sentiments. Okay, I'll go ahead and spin around and look at it all again. When I am no longer sad about leaving NDTV, we can have a serious conversation about the network.
For almost twenty years, NDTV has relied on Ravish Kumar's expertise. He formerly hosted shows such as Ravish ki Report, Prime Time, Hum Log, and Des Ki Baat.
Members of the channel's editorial staff have verified the resignation:
The Adani company's public offer to acquire NDTV is set to expire on December 5 of this year.
NDTV announced in a regulatory filing that they would be adding three new directors to their board: Sudipta Bhattacharya, who is the chief technology officer for the Adani group, Sanjay Pugalia, who is a prominent journalist and the CEO of Adani's AMG Media Network, and Senthil Sinniah Chengalvarayan, who is a writer. NDTV made this announcement late on Tuesday night.
