In a significant step towards gender parity and
inclusivity, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, in a noteworthy move, has
reconstituted the panel of vice-chairpersons, ensuring that it now comprises 50
percent women Members of Parliament (MPs).
Furthermore, Dhankhar also hinted at the possibility
of an even higher representation of women in this panel in the days to come.
The recently reconstituted eight-member panel now
comprises four female members.
Among them are Kanta Kardam, Sumitra Balmik, and Geeta alias Chandraprabha, all belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), along with Mamata Mohanta, from the Biju Janata Dal.
Furthermore, the panel's composition includes
Akhilesh Prasad Singh representing the Congress, Narain Dass Gupta from the Aam
Aadmi Party, V Vijayasai Reddy representing the YSRCP, and Santanu Sen as a
member from the Trinamool Congress.
Dhankhar announced this decision during the
commencement of the Special Session of Parliament in the Upper House on its
first day.
He declared, “The House members are informed that the panel of vice-chairpersons has been reconstituted with effect from September 13, 2023.”
Dhankar further added, “Honourable members will be
happy to note that 50% of the vice chairpersons happen to be women.”
During the announcement of the reconstituted panel
of vice-chairpersons, which now features a 50 per cent representation of women
MPs, the Chairman also hinted at the potential for an even greater number of
female MPs in the panel at some point in the future.
