President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to travel to West Bengal on Thursday. As part of her day-long trip to Kolkata, she will inaugurate the 'My Bengal, Addiction Free Bengal' Initiative as a component of the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.' This event is being coordinated by the Brahma Kumaris at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata.

In March of this year, the President made her visit to West Bengal, during which she was welcomed with a Guard of Honour at Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

Additionally, she will participate in the launch of Vindhyagiri, which is the sixth ship from the Project 17A series developed by the Indian Navy at Garden Reach Shipbuilders Engineers Limited. This ship, named after the mountain range in Karnataka, is part of the Project 17A Frigates. These frigates are an evolution of the Project 17 Class Frigates (also known as the Shivalik Class), boasting enhanced stealth capabilities, advanced weaponry and sensors, as well as improved platform management systems.

The Project 17A initiative involves four ships by Mazagon Dock Ltd (MDL) and three ships by GRSE currently in construction. The MDL and GRSE have launched the first five ships of the project between 2019 and 2022.

President Murmu will oversee its launch at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) in Kolkata on August 17, according to the Navy. This technologically advanced frigate, named after the former INS Vindhyagiri, pays tribute to its predecessor's distinguished service. The original Vindhyagiri served from July 1981 to June 2012, undertaking various demanding operations and multinational exercises.

The newly christened Vindhyagiri represents India's commitment to preserving its naval heritage while advancing towards a future of self-sustained defense capabilities, the Navy stated.

Notably, the design of Project 17A ships has been handled internally by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau.  Around 75% of the orders for equipment and systems for Project 17A ships are sourced from domestic firms, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the Navy added.

The Navy also remarked that the launch showcases India's progress in building a self-reliant naval force.
