Odisha Train Crash:-

After a terrible three-train collision on Friday in the Balasore district of Odisha, about a thousand people were injured in addition to over 280 fatalities. Investigations so far point to the Coromandel Express having inadvertently entered the loop line before colliding with a cargo train that was waiting there just in front of Bahanagar Bazar station.

In the meantime, the Coromandel Express dispersed coaches on the adjacent track were damaged when the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express overturned. The Coromandel Express collided with the cargo train, according to several eyewitness testimonies, however, the Indian Railways has not formally acknowledged these claims.

Additionally, issues with potential operational flaws and signal errors have been brought up. The Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express was travelling at a speed of 116 kmph, while the Coromandel Express was travelling at 128 kmph, according to a PTI report citing sources. About 2,000 people were travelling on the two trains. A halted goods train was the third carrier involved in the collision.

How do Loop Lines Work?

To facilitate rail operations and accommodate more trains, loop lines are built in the vicinity of stations. In order to handle full-length freight trains with numerous engines, they are typically 750 metres long. Such tracks travel a brief distance before returning to the main line.

What Occurred Last Friday?

The tragedy happened on Friday after the Coromandel Express train entered the loop line where the goods train was halted. It happened right in front of the Bahanaga Bazar station. The Coromandel Express may have veered off the main line at a certain intersection of the rails, according to reports referencing the yard layout plan.

According to an NDTV report, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express was passing via the “DNA line,” while the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express had been travelling alone on the “UP line.” Several of the Coromandel Express’s coaches are said to have fallen off the freight train as it collided with it and onto the neighbouring DN line, directly into the path of the approaching Bengaluru-Howrah train.

The signal was issued and taken off for train number 12841, according to the preliminary investigation report obtained by PTI. The train then entered the loop line, collided with the goods train, and derailed. While this was going on, train 12864 crossed the downed main line, and two of its carriages capsized and derailed.
