Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra's recent expulsion from the Lok Sabha following allegations of involvement in a 'cash-for-query' scandal has sparked a contentious legal battle. Moitra swiftly took her case to the Supreme Court, vehemently contesting the grounds for her removal and denouncing the process as biased and unjust.

The expulsion came in the wake of accusations of unethical conduct, leading Moitra to face a panel report without being granted the opportunity to defend herself adequately. She strongly criticized this process, likening it to a 'kangaroo court' and raising concerns about the alleged misuse of parliamentary panels by the government to stifle opposition dissent.

Moitra vehemently denied the allegations, emphasizing the lack of concrete evidence to support claims of any financial transactions. The Ethics Committee's report specifically accused her of breaching security protocols by sharing sensitive login credentials, potentially jeopardizing national security. This report further triggered calls for a comprehensive government-led inquiry into her actions.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi spearheaded the motion for Moitra's expulsion, citing instances of alleged unethical behavior, including her acceptance of gifts from a businessman. This motion culminated in a vote resulting in her removal from the Lok Sabha. Despite requests from opposition members, Moitra was not given an opportunity to present her perspective within the House.

The expulsion decision faced severe criticism, especially from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who vehemently condemned it as an attack on democratic principles and accused it of being politically motivated. She labeled it a betrayal of parliamentary democracy, signaling a deepening political rift.

Moitra's swift action in challenging her expulsion through legal means marks a significant turn in this ongoing saga, highlighting the tense and polarized political landscape within the country's legislative corridors. The unfolding legal battle in the Supreme Court is poised to intensify as both sides stand firm on their positions, making this a focal point in the ongoing political discourse.
