Late on Tuesday,
the Customs department discovered more than 500 grams of gold, with an
estimated value of around Rs 25.75 lakhs, concealed beneath the inner sole of a
passenger's shoes at Cochin International Airport in Kerala. Officials stated
that the seized gold was found on a traveler arriving from Bahrain to Cochin,
Kerala.
Cochin Customs
stated that, while examining a female passenger arriving from Bahrain to
Cochin, they had discovered and confiscated two square-shaped black packets
containing gold in paste form, weighing 275.94 grams, concealed beneath the
inner sole of her shoes, as well as five crude bangles and a gold chain
weighing 253.45 grams, which she was wearing. The estimated value of the recovered
gold was Rs 25.75 lakhs.
Utilizing a
combination of passenger profiling and meticulous surveillance, the officers of
Hyderabad Customs stationed at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA)
achieved a commendable feat on Tuesday. They effectively seized a total of 1.52
kilograms of smuggled gold, which had an estimated value of about Rs. 93.26
lakhs. This accomplishment occurred in two separate incidents on the previous
day, involving passengers arriving from Dubai at the Hyderabad airport.
In the first
incident, they discovered a hidden stash of 810 grams of gold, which was worth
an impressive Rs. 49.47 lakhs, concealed within clothing. The second incident
revealed another hidden treasure: 717 grams of gold, valued at a significant
Rs. 43.79 lakhs, ingeniously tucked away within garments. The successful
discovery of these concealed gold reserves highlights the diligent efforts made
by the Hyderabad Customs officials.
