Valarmathi, an ISRO scientist and the voice of many countdowns for rocket launches in Sriharikota including Chandrayaan 3, died on Saturday due to cardiac arrest, said the national space agency's PRO.
The death of Valarmathi, a renowned scientist with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has devastated India's space community.
Valarmathi's contributions to India's space programme were invaluable; she is most known for reading the countdown announcements before rocket launches from Sriharikota.
Her last recorded words occurred during the dramatic final seconds of the Chandrayaan-3 mission's lunar landing.
The Lander Module (LM) of Chandrayaan-3, which includes the lander Vikram and the rover Pragyan, successfully landed on the moon's surface on August 23. India became only the fourth country to successfully soft-land on the Moon, and the first to reach the Moon's hitherto unexplored south pole, thanks to this success.
ISRO recently revealed that the Pragyan rover had gone into a slumber mode and would be reactivated in 14 days. The APXS Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer and the LIBS Laser Induced Breakdown Spectrometer are two of the rover's most important payloads. These tools are made to determine the elemental and mineralogical makeup of lunar soil and rocks.
However, the "awakening" of Pragyan is now crucial to the accomplishment of the mission. The rover could become India's permanent representative on the Moon if this procedure fails.
The success of Chandrayaan-3, a project that has increased our understanding of Earth's cosmic neighbour, is a testament to Valarmathi's contributions. As the space world says goodbye to this brilliant scientist, they keep praying for Pragyan's revival, knowing that this is what will ultimately determine the mission's success.
