Israel Commits to Daily Humanitarian Pauses Amidst Gaza Conflict: White House Announcement

In a significant development, Israel has acquiesced to implementing four-hour daily humanitarian pauses in its ongoing conflict with Hamas in northern Gaza, as confirmed by the White House on Thursday. President Joe Biden exerted pressure on Israel to instate a multi-day cessation, specifically to facilitate negotiations for the release of hostages held by the terrorist group. During a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, Biden requested daily pauses and expressed interest in a more extended three-day halt.

President Biden affirmed his request for an even more prolonged pause, emphasizing the importance of negotiations. He clarified that, at present, a formal ceasefire appears improbable, and the process of Israel agreeing to these humanitarian pauses has taken longer than anticipated.

The National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, stated that Israel committed to announcing each four-hour window at least three hours beforehand, ensuring a coordinated approach. Additionally, Israel has opened a second corridor, allowing civilians to evacuate the areas targeted in its military operations against Hamas.

While short-term pauses have occurred in recent days, Thursday's announcement suggests an effort to expand and formalize the process. Prime Minister Netanyahu, in a Fox News interview, explained that the fighting persists against Hamas terrorists, but specific locations will experience temporary halts to facilitate the safe passage of civilians away from conflict zones.

Biden's push for a more extended pause aligns with renewed diplomatic efforts to free hostages taken by Hamas during their surprise attack on Israel in October. Israeli officials estimate that 239 people, including children and the elderly, remain hostages, with fewer than 10 Americans among them. The Gaza Health Ministry, under Hamas control, reports over 10,800 casualties as the conflict continues to unfold.
