Infosys Makes Work from Office Mandatory

In a significant policy change, global technology consulting giant Infosys has made it mandatory for employees in the United States and Canada to work from the office, enforcing disciplinary action for those who fail to comply. This decision marks a shift from the widespread adoption of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Employees would need to request special authorization to use the work-from-home (WFH) option, according to an internal letter from the Bengaluru-based corporation. About 30,000 people work for Infosys in the US and Canada combined.

Infosys, known for its innovation and expertise in IT services and consulting, has long embraced flexible work arrangements. However, as the world gradually recovers from the pandemic, the company is now implementing measures to bring employees back to the office in an effort to foster collaboration, enhance productivity, and maintain the company’s vibrant corporate culture.

The work-from-office mandate applies to all employees based in the United States and Canada, regardless of their roles or seniority within the organization. Infosys has outlined a comprehensive plan to ensure a smooth transition back to the physical workspace while prioritizing the health and safety of its workforce.

Employees on US payroll need to seek special permission if they are travelling outside the country and continue working during their travel. Employees need to also provide their home address when they apply for WFH.

Under the new policy, employees were permitted to visit the office as often as they liked during the first phase of the three-stage plan. Employees would then have the option to go to a branch office of their choice or accept a transfer during the second phase. Infosys will take the feedback from the two phases to decide on its hybrid work strategy in the last step.

Infosys’ decision to make work from the office mandatory stems from the belief that face-to-face interactions and direct collaboration play a pivotal role in driving innovation and problem-solving. The company aims to leverage the benefits of physical work environments, such as spontaneous idea generation, mentoring opportunities, and cross-team collaboration, which may be challenging to replicate in remote settings.

However, it is worth noting that Infosys continues to support flexible work arrangements for employees in other regions where local conditions and regulations allow for remote work. The company acknowledges the varying dynamics across different geographies and will assess the feasibility of such policies on a case-by-case basis.

As organizations worldwide grapple with the future of work post-pandemic, Infosys’ decision to mandate work from offices in the US and Canada showcases the evolving strategies employed by companies to strike a balance between productivity and employee well-being.

While the move may receive mixed reactions from employees who have become accustomed to remote work, Infosys aims to facilitate a smooth transition and address any concerns through regular communication channels and support networks.

As the global economy rebounds and workforces adapt to new norms, the long-term implications of Infosys’ policy shift and the broader discussions surrounding remote work are likely to shape the future of work for years to come.
