Heavy Rains in Congo Claim Lives: 22 Dead, 10 from One Family

In a tragic event triggered by heavy rains, 22 lives were claimed in Congo's flooding, including 10 from a single family. The devastation hit Kananga in Kasai Central province, causing destruction and prompting urgent rescue operations amidst widespread material damage.

Central Congo recently witnessed a catastrophic event as heavy rains triggered fatal flooding, claiming 22 lives, including ten individuals from a single family. The province's governor, John Kabeya, confirmed the devastating toll, emphasizing the destruction caused to numerous residences and structures in Kananga.

Governor Kabeya highlighted the collapse of a wall that resulted in the tragic loss of ten family members in Bikuku, underscoring the severity of the situation. Rescue efforts intensified, focusing on finding survivors amidst the wreckage caused by the hours-long rainfall in the district.

Nathalie Kambala, the country director of The Hand in Hand for Integral Development NGO, noted substantial material damage resulting from the floods. This calamity adds to the frequent occurrences of flooding due to heavy rainfall in various parts of Congo, particularly affecting remote areas.

Regrettably, this isn't an isolated incident. Earlier in May, over 400 lives were claimed by floods and landslides in eastern Congo's South Kivu province due to torrential overnight rains. The damage in Kananga includes the Higher Institute of Technology, a church, and a major road, demanding urgent action from the national government.

Moreover, eastern Congo experienced further devastation with a landslide causing four deaths and leaving 20 individuals missing. These consecutive tragedies underline the pressing need for proactive measures and robust disaster management strategies to mitigate the recurring devastation caused by natural calamities in the region.
