On Friday, Eric Garcetti, former Mayor of Los Angeles, was sworn in as the US ambassador to India during a ceremony attended by Vice President Kamala Harris. Garcetti expressed his eagerness to serve and gratitude to President Biden and the White House for his confirmation by the US Senate after a two-year hiatus.

However, his nomination had been pending since July 2021 due to concerns raised by lawmakers regarding his handling of allegations of sexual assault and harassment against a former senior adviser. Despite this, Garcetti supporters argued that it was crucial not to leave India without an ambassador due to geopolitical concerns.

The US Embassy in India has been without an ambassador since January 2021, the longest stretch in the history of US-India relations that the post has remained vacant since Kenneth Juster, the last US envoy in New Delhi, stepped down after the change of government in America.

As the new ambassador of India, Garcetti will play a crucial role in strengthening the bilateral relationship between the United States and India. He has emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two countries in areas such as climate change, trade, and regional security.

During his confirmation hearing, Garcetti highlighted his experience as the mayor of a diverse and multicultural city like Los Angeles and his understanding of India's cultural and economic diversity. He also expressed his commitment to promoting people-to-people ties between the two nations and enhancing educational and cultural exchanges.

As the US Embassy in India has been without an ambassador for over two years, Garcetti's appointment has been widely welcomed by leaders from both countries. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar congratulated Garcetti on his appointment and expressed his confidence in his ability to take the relationship between the two nations to new heights.

Garcetti's appointment comes at a time when the world is facing unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
