Earthquake of 6 magnitude hits Japan day after Taiwan earthquake

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, an earthquake with a Richter magnitude of 6.3 occurred off the coast of Honshu, Japan, on Thursday.

The epicentre of the earthquake was stated by EMSC to be 32 kilometers (19.88 miles) deep. The earthquake, which had an epicentre 40 kilometers (25 miles) underground, was also felt in Tokyo. In the immediate wake of the incident, there were no reports of damage or injuries. The earthquake struck Tokyo quite strongly.

TEPCO, the company that operates the nuclear power station at Fukushima, has stated that "no abnormalities" have been found at the affected plant or any other reactors in the area.

Japan, one of the seismically active countries in the world, has implemented stringent building regulations to ensure that its structures can endure the greatest tremors.

With a population of over 125 million, the archipelago is subject to an average of over 1,500 jolts annually. These shocks are quite modest in the large majority.

The magnitude of the earthquake that occurred on Thursday was 6.1, and the depth was recorded at 40.1 kilometers by the US Geological Survey.

A massive earthquake that struck Taiwan just one day before this news was released caused over a thousand injuries and at least nine fatalities.

In March 2011, a massive subterranean earthquake with a Richter scale value of 9.0 occurred off the northeast coast of Japan. It was the largest known earthquake to have strike Japan. Almost 18,500 persons lost their lives or went missing as a result of the tsunami that this earthquake caused.
