Heavy Rains in Mumbai and Maharashtra

Continuous heavy rainfall in Mumbai and various parts of Maharashtra has caused widespread devastation, leading to waterlogging, disrupted train schedules, and natural disasters. Among these calamities, landslides have been particularly deadly, with a tragic incident claiming the lives of sixteen people in the Raigad area. The Maharashtra government has called on officials to remain vigilant and take necessary measures to prevent further loss of life in rain-affected regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a grave warning, predicting heavy rainfall in Thane, Raigad, Pune, and Palghar districts for today and tomorrow. Mumbai and Ratnagiri have also been placed on high alert.

In Raigad district, a devastating landslide struck a tribal hamlet during heavy rains, resulting in thirteen fatalities, while twenty-one individuals were rescued. The difficult weather conditions have hindered rescue efforts and increased the risk of more landslides, leading to a temporary halt in operations until the following day.

Eknath Shinde, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, visited the disaster site to oversee rescue efforts and offer condolences to the affected families. He announced compensation of ₹5 lakh for each of the deceased's families and pledged to cover the medical expenses of the injured.

As a precautionary measure, schools in vulnerable areas of Pune district will be closed tomorrow, while teachers are required to be present, according to the directive from Pune district collector Rajesh Deshmukh.

In addition to the human toll, the incessant rainfall has severely disrupted transportation, with over 100 local train services canceled in Mumbai and nearby areas. As the region faces ongoing heavy rainfall and potential risks, rescue and relief efforts persist amidst the challenging conditions.
