Cyclone Mocha Unleashes Havoc In Myanmar, At Least 6 People Dead

Cyclone Mocha has left Myanmar devastated, killing at least six people as well as leaving 1000 people trapped along Myanmar’s coast.
After Cyclone Mocha destroyed the state of Rakhine, a national disaster was declared in those areas. This category-five storm is recorded as one of the strongest storms that have hit the Bay of Bengal in the past century. The Rakhine Youths Philanthropic Association in Sittwe informed that around 700 out of 20,000 people have been injured by the cyclone.
Cyclone Mocha brought about heavy rains and strong winds up to 210 kph. The strong winds ripped through the roofs of the houses while the seawater rushed into more than 10 low-lying wards along the coast. The local media has reported that the storm destroyed more than 850 houses, 14 health facilities, and 64 schools.BBC also reported that the storm has ravaged at least 90 per cent of the city. At the same time, Myanmar’s military information office revealed that the townships of Kyaukpyu, Gwa, and Sittwe were the ones to be hit the hardest by the storm.
As per the report of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the “ongoing wild weather” has wrecked the country’s telecommunications system which has become an obstacle in assessing the disaster’s full magnitude. “Early reports suggest the damage is extensive and needs among already vulnerable communities, particularly displaced people, will be high”, it stated. A spokesman of the Arakan Army militia force informed Reuters that the army is trying tocollect information regarding the destruction the storm has caused through its own communication equipment since the telecommunications have been severely damaged.
Even though 400,000 people were already evacuated from the affected areas in Myanmar and Bangladesh, many more wait for the aid agencies to reach them.
