Congress MP's Properties Raided: Rs 355 Crore Recovered, Tax Evasion Alleged

Income Tax department's ongoing raids at properties linked to Congress MP Dheeraj Sahu have recovered over Rs 355 crore in cash. The investigation spans Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal with counting ongoing at multiple locations. The recovered amounts may be linked to alleged tax evasion by a distillery group.

In a continuing operation by the Income Tax department at various properties associated with Congress MP Dheeraj Sahu, over Rs 355 crore in cash has been seized. These properties are suspected to be linked to a liquor company accused of tax evasion. The raids, on their sixth day, targeted locations in Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.

Officials revealed that the counting of cash is nearing completion at most sites except for Sahu's residence in Ranchi, where the process is still ongoing. Approximately 50 State Bank of India employees utilized over 25 machines for counting. However, technical issues arose due to overheating in some machines during the process.

Interestingly, a previous GST raid in Kanpur in 2019 had uncovered Rs 257 crore. Nonetheless, the Income Tax Department refrained from issuing any official statement, following its usual practice of waiting until the raid's completion and assessment of recovered assets, including cash, jewelry, and property.

Upon completion, the department typically seeks clarification from the individual regarding the sources of the recovered assets. Failure to provide accurate details could result in the seizure and deposit of all recoveries into a bank account.

Post the Ranchi cash count, the Income Tax Department plans to interrogate Dheeraj Sahu. Additionally, notices will be issued to Sahu's family members due to significant cash findings, with further actions to ensue.

Meanwhile, the Congress distanced itself from Sahu's businesses, emphasizing no affiliation with his commercial ventures. AICC General Secretary Communications Jairam Ramesh highlighted Sahu's accountability in explaining the substantial cash unearthed during the income-tax raids.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the public of recovering looted funds. He urged citizens to scrutinize the huge cash pile discovered and emphasized the necessity of returning every penny misappropriated from the public.
